Summer's End
Hello Friends,
I’ll be honest, this summer was a rough one. I’m not even sure this is the place to be sharing this but here we are. In June, we had to put my beloved cat to sleep. On my birthday. She was my constant companion — for nineteen years! — and I felt her loss keenly. But far more devastating was the sudden death of my father just a few weeks ago. He’d had some health issues recently and was in the hospital for a bit, but he was back home and seemed to be recovering. We saw him just days before he died, for which I’m very grateful. Still, the grief has been completely overwhelming. My dad and I were close and as I navigate the bureaucracy around his loss, I simultaneously go to text or call him to check in or for advice, which is so incredibly disorienting. I understand physically the expression ‘beside myself’. I feel outside of my body, watching these things take place and not quite believing they are real. How can he really be gone? My heart goes out to all of you who have experienced this kind of profound loss of someone close to you. Send all available advice, I need all the help I can get to make it through.
Please read on for announcements about the gallery I’ve started working with, an art fair next month, upcoming shows and a residency in Ireland in May.
New piece called ‘Spring Spiderweb’
Good Naked Gallery
A good thing that happened this summer: in July I joined Good Naked gallery, run by Jaqueline Cedar. Not only do I love the other artists Jaqueline shows, I love her approach to running a gallery and representing artists. I think because she’s an artist herself, a truly talented painter, she understands some of the ways the traditional gallery model can be frustrating. So she’s coming at it in a very thoughtful way. I’m so happy to be working with her.
Minor Attractions - Art Fair in London
Following on that news, Good Naked will be participating in the art fair Minor Attractions, held at the Mandrake Hotel in London from October 8-13. It coincides with Frieze and is kind of like the Felix Art Fair here in LA. Jaqueline will be showing a collection of my quilt paintings alongside the paintings of Jefreid Lotti. If you’ll be in London then and would like to attend, please reach out and I’ll connect you with Jaqueline. She has VIP passes and more info about all the events taking place that week.
Show at the University of Nevada, Reno
I’m excited to be part of this three person show currently up in Lake Tahoe. It runs through November. And there will be a reception on Oct. 8. All of the info is below:
Install photos of the show.
Cill Rialaig
And finally some bittersweet news. I found out that I’ve been selected to attend the residency program Cill Rialaig in County Kerry, Ireland. I’ll be there for two weeks in May. This is the first residency I’ve been able to do in a number of years and I’m incredibly excited. My father’s grandmother was born in County Cork and it’s somewhere he and I always wanted to visit together. So I’ll be thinking of him as I explore the west coast of Ireland and spend time making art there.
New work in progress in the studio. Based on a visit to George Air Force Base, a superfund site here in Southern California.
Thank you for reading this and for being here, I appreciate it so much.
Love, Caitlin

Heard in the studio: Billie Holiday - I’ll Be Seeing You (my dad sent me an email sharing this song about a month ago, a favorite of his from his childhood. It’s so beautiful.)
